McIntosh MC462: used price, what changed from the MC452, and what to check before you buy

By HiFi Registry Staff · Published

In short: The MC462 is McIntosh's most powerful stereo amplifier, a 450 watt per channel solid-state Quad Balanced design with an output autoformer on each channel so the full rating holds into 2, 4 or 8 ohms. It replaced the MC452 in 2018 at $9,000 and now lists at $11,500 in the US. Dealer-certified used examples have recently sold at $8,499, and a private European sale closed at EUR 7,495 in spring 2026. HiFi Registry's recorded sales for this model are in the table further down the page. Prices checked November 1, 2026.

Lineage: MC402 to MC452 to MC462

There is one version of the MC462. What you are really choosing between on the used market is three generations of the same idea.

ModelYearsPowerWhat changed
MC4022002 to 2011400 W x 2, 800 W bridged monoThe last of the line that could be bridged. Autoformer outputs.
MC4522010 to 2018450 W x 2Quad Balanced circuit, new chassis and faceplate, larger meters, patented Solid Cinch binding posts. Launched at $7,500. Dynamic headroom 1.8 dB.
MC4622018 to present450 W x 2Power supply filter capacity up nearly 50 percent, which McIntosh says raised dynamic headroom from 1.8 dB to 3.0 dB. Upgraded internal wiring and components, LED faceplate backlighting, new autoformer and transformer enclosures under one machined cover, Eco auto-off. Launched at $9,000.

Source: McIntosh's legacy product pages, the MC462 product page and the 2010 and 2018 launch announcements. Power Guard, Sentry Monitor, autoformers and balanced inputs carry across all three generations; a seller who lists them as upgrades over the MC452 is padding the description.

Specs that matter

  • 450 watts per channel into 2, 4 or 8 ohms, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, 0.005 percent THD
  • Dynamic headroom 3.0 dB; damping factor above 40 wideband; signal to noise 122 dB below rated output
  • Quad Balanced: two push-pull output sections per phase in each channel, so common-mode noise and distortion cancel
  • One output autoformer per channel; speaker taps for 2, 4 and 8 ohms
  • Power Guard clipping protection and Sentry Monitor fuseless short-circuit protection, both standard McIntosh
  • Monogrammed Heatsinks: four, bonded to the output transistors, intended to shorten the time the amp takes to reach thermal equilibrium
  • Inputs: balanced and unbalanced, with a rear switch to select which is live; balanced and unbalanced pass-through outputs for bi-amping or a subwoofer
  • Mono bridge: no. Mono parallel: no. McIntosh's spec table says so explicitly. This is a stereo amplifier only.
  • 115 lb (52.3 kg) unpacked, 148 lb shipping; 17.5 x 9.44 x 22.5 inches including handles
  • US list: $11,500 at authorized dealers (November 2026); $9,000 at launch in 2018, $10,000 in between
  • Warranty: 3 years from purchase, original owner only, terminates on transfer, valid only on units bought from an authorized McIntosh dealer

Stereophile's bench test (John Atkinson, May 2019) shows why the taps matter. From the 8 ohm tap the amp clipped at 516 W into 8 ohms and 720 W into 4 ohms, both channels driven. A 2 ohm load on the 8 ohm tap pushed distortion past 2 percent; the 2 ohm tap delivered 536 W into 2 ohms cleanly. Match the tap to the speaker.

Used prices

HiFi Registry's recorded sales for the MC462 are in the table below this guide. What the wider market shows, as of this writing:

  • Dealer certified pre-owned, US: TMR Audio has sold two examples at $8,499 each, both rated 8 of 10 cosmetically, against the current $11,500 list. That is 74 percent of list for an amp that may be several years old. SkyFi Audio has a single-owner example on offer at an undisclosed price with a one year shop warranty and no McIntosh coverage.
  • Private sales, Europe: one example sold at EUR 7,495 on audio-markt.de in a listing that ran March to May 2026. Another was asking EUR 9,950 in October 2026. European list is higher than US, so do not read these across directly.

Expect a private US sale to land below the dealer-certified number, because the buyer takes on freight and risk on a 148 lb crate, and above what the same amp fetched two years ago, because list has risen 28 percent since launch and used prices follow.

What to check before buying

  1. Shipping is the first risk. The MC462 ships at 148 lb. Insist on the original factory packaging and a freight carrier, or buy local. A dropped MC462 shows up as cracked glass, bent handles or a shifted autoformer, none of it cheap to fix.
  2. Front glass and faceplate. McIntosh excludes cosmetic items from warranty. Look for chips at the corners and scratches around the handles. TMR's certified examples at $8,499 both had minor marks; perfect glass commands a premium.
  3. Meters and backlighting. The MC462 uses LED backlighting, so dim or uneven light is a fault, not age. Check that both meters track together on a mono signal.
  4. Heatsink fins. The four Monogrammed Heatsinks on the rear are exposed. Nicked fins are common and harmless but should be priced in.
  5. All three sets of speaker taps. Confirm output on the 2, 4 and 8 ohm taps on both channels. Solid Cinch posts should lock firmly; a loose or cross-threaded post is a service item.
  6. Protection circuits. Power Guard acts on the input signal to stop clipping, and Sentry Monitor shuts the output stage down on a short and resets itself. Neither should trip in normal use with ordinary speakers. A seller who mentions the amp "going into protection" is describing a fault, not a feature.
  7. Serial and purchase date. The warranty is 3 years from original purchase and ends on transfer, so a used MC462 has no McIntosh coverage regardless of age. A dated receipt from an authorized dealer still shows the amp is not grey market.
  8. Do not plan on bridging. Two MC462s cannot be combined. If you want more than 450 watts per channel, the answer is monoblocks.

Who it is for, and what else to consider

The MC462 is for owners of low-sensitivity or low-impedance speakers who want a single stereo chassis and do not want to think about power again. Stereophile's reviewer kept the review sample and called the result "quiet power"; the measurements back the claim of 450 watts into any of the three taps.

If 450 watts is more than you need, the MC312 and MC152 are the smaller stereo amps in the same McIntosh solid-state line, at lower weight and lower used money. If you need more, the MC611 monoblocks are the step up. The MC462's natural partners are the C53 solid-state and C2700 tube preamplifiers, the two McIntosh most often pairs with it in reviews and dealer systems. A used MC452 gives up 1.2 dB of dynamic headroom and the LED lighting but is otherwise the same amplifier for noticeably less money.

Frequently asked questions

What is a used McIntosh MC462 worth? Dealer-certified examples in the US have sold at $8,499 against an $11,500 list. Private sales should come in below that; see the recorded sales table for what has actually changed hands on HiFi Registry.

When did the MC462 come out and what did it cost? McIntosh announced it in July 2018 at $9,000 as the replacement for the MC452. US list has since risen to $11,500.

What is the difference between the MC452 and MC462? Same 450 watt rating and Quad Balanced circuit. The MC462 has nearly 50 percent more power supply filter capacitance, which lifts dynamic headroom from 1.8 dB to 3.0 dB, plus LED backlighting, upgraded wiring, new transformer enclosures and an Eco auto-off.

Can the MC462 be bridged to mono? No. McIntosh's specifications list both mono bridge and mono parallel as not supported. The older MC402 could be bridged to 800 watts; the MC452 and MC462 cannot.

How heavy is the MC462? 115 lb (52.3 kg) out of the box, 148 lb shipping weight. It is a two-person lift.

Does the McIntosh warranty transfer to a second owner? No. The 3 year warranty covers the original purchaser only, ends on transfer, and applies only to units bought from an authorized McIntosh dealer.

Understanding the market

Half of recorded transactions fall between $6,900 and $7,500. The full range is tight — lowest to highest is only 1.2×, which suggests these units trade in a well-established band and condition moves price less than it does for many models.

What buyers should know

Units recorded in excellent condition averaged $7,500, 4% above the overall average across 2 recorded sales. That premium is what buyers are paying for cosmetics and service history rather than the model itself.

Ask when the unit was last serviced and whether the output devices are original. Bias and DC offset drift with age on solid-state amps. Confirm both channels have been tested under load, not just powered on.

This range reflects 3 completed sales on HiFi Registry. That is a small sample on its own — it shows what the model has traded for here rather than across the whole used market, so weigh it alongside the wider market range above rather than reading it as a settled valuation.
