McIntosh MC312: used price, what changed from the MC302, and what to check before you buy

By HiFi Registry Staff · Published

In short: The MC312 is McIntosh's 300 watt per channel solid-state stereo amplifier, with an output autoformer on each channel so the full rating holds into 2, 4 or 8 ohms. It replaced the MC302 in October 2018 at $7,000 and now lists at $8,500 in the US. Dealer-certified used examples have sold at $4,999 and are currently asking around $6,100, which puts a clean MC312 at roughly 60 to 70 percent of list. HiFi Registry's recorded sales for this model are in the table further down the page. Prices checked November 1, 2026.

Lineage: MC352 to MC302 to MC312

There is one version of the MC312. What you are really choosing between on the used market is three generations of McIntosh's 300 watt class stereo amp.

ModelYearsPowerWhat changed
MC3521998 to 2004350 W x 2, 700 W x 1The last 300 watt class stereo McIntosh with a mono mode. Autoformer outputs. Older chassis and meter design.
MC3022010 to 2018300 W x 2New faceplate and chassis shared with the MC452, larger watt meters, Solid Cinch binding posts, Thermal Track monitoring, potted autoformers in aluminum enclosures. Launched at $5,500 in October 2010. Dynamic headroom 1.8 dB.
MC3122018 to present300 W x 2Filter capacitance doubled, which McIntosh says raised dynamic headroom from 1.8 dB to 2.3 dB. Upgraded circuit components and wiring, direct LED backlighting, new autoformer enclosures under one cover, Monogrammed Heatsinks, eco-friendly power management, balanced and unbalanced pass-through outputs added. Launched at $7,000.

Source: McIntosh's legacy product pages, the MC312 product page and the 2010 and 2018 launch announcements. Autoformers, Power Guard, Sentry Monitor and Power Control carry across all three; a seller who lists them as MC312 upgrades is padding the description.

Specs that matter

  • 300 watts per channel into 2, 4 or 8 ohms, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, 0.005 percent THD
  • Dynamic headroom 2.3 dB; damping factor above 40 wideband; signal to noise 120 dB below rated output balanced, 118 dB unbalanced
  • Push-pull complementary solid-state output stage. McIntosh does not call the MC312 Quad Balanced; that term belongs to the MC462 and MC611.
  • One output autoformer per channel; speaker taps for 2, 4 and 8 ohms on Solid Cinch binding posts
  • Power Guard clipping protection and Sentry Monitor fuseless short-circuit protection
  • Inputs: balanced and unbalanced (McIntosh quotes a separate noise figure for each); balanced and unbalanced pass-through outputs for bi-amping, a second system or a powered subwoofer
  • Mono bridge: no. Mono parallel: no. McIntosh's spec table says so explicitly. If you want 700 watts from the 300 watt class, only the old MC352 did it.
  • Direct LED illumination of the glass front panel; meter lights can be switched off
  • 105 lb (47.6 kg) unpacked, 138 lb shipping; 17.5 x 9.44 x 22 inches including feet, handles and cables
  • US list: $8,500 at authorized dealers (November 2026); $7,000 at launch in 2018
  • Warranty: 3 years from purchase, original owner only, terminates on transfer, valid only on units bought from an authorized McIntosh dealer in the US or Canada

Neither of the independent reviews we found bench-tested the amp. Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity, which gave the MC312 its 2019 Best Stereo Power Amplifier award, reported the meters "barely registered 60 watts" at high listening levels and compared it favorably with a $14,200 Pass Labs X350.8. NOVO's reviewer called it "perhaps the finest, most sophisticated amplifier I have heard in its price range." Both reviewed it at the $7,000 launch price.

Used prices

HiFi Registry's recorded sales for the MC312 are in the table below this guide. What the wider market shows, as of this writing:

  • Dealer certified pre-owned, US: TMR Audio sold a cosmetic 9 example (with factory packaging) at $4,999, and a second example in "very good" condition has also sold through, price not shown on the closed listing. A third, five years old with two prior owners, is asking $6,099 plus $399 freight. TMR lists the current MSRP as $8,500 on its newest listing.
  • New stock: SkyFi Audio has a new MC312 at $8,500, in-store only. That is full list, so there is no discounted new price to anchor against.
  • Overseas asking prices: European listings cluster around EUR 12,000 to 13,000, often bundled with a C53 or C2700 preamp. European list is higher than US, so do not read these across.

Expect a private US sale to land between the two TMR numbers, roughly $5,000 to $6,000 for a clean, complete example with packaging. Used examples sit at 60 to 70 percent of current list, partly because list rose 21 percent after launch and used prices have not fully followed.

What to check before buying

  1. Shipping is the first risk. The MC312 ships at 138 lb. Insist on the original factory packaging and a freight carrier, or buy local. TMR charges $399 to ship one within the lower 48; budget for that on any remote purchase.
  2. Front glass and faceplate. McIntosh excludes cosmetic items from warranty. Look for chips at the corners and scratches around the handles. The TMR examples both carried light marks; perfect glass commands a premium.
  3. Meters and backlighting. The MC312 uses direct LED backlighting, so dim or uneven light is a fault, not age. Confirm both meters track together on a mono signal.
  4. Heatsink fins. The Monogrammed Heatsinks on the rear are exposed. Scuffed fin edges were noted on two of the three TMR listings. Harmless, but price them in.
  5. All three sets of speaker taps. Confirm output on the 2, 4 and 8 ohm taps on both channels. Solid Cinch posts should lock firmly; the binding post tool should be in the box.
  6. Pass-through outputs. These are the main functional reason to pay MC312 money over an MC302. Test them if you plan to bi-amp or run a subwoofer.
  7. Protection circuits. Power Guard stops clipping at the input and Sentry Monitor shuts the output stage down on a short and resets itself. A seller who mentions the amp "going into protection" in normal use is describing a fault.
  8. Serial and purchase date. The warranty is 3 years from original purchase and ends on transfer, so a used MC312 has no McIntosh coverage regardless of age. A dated receipt from an authorized dealer still shows the amp is not grey market. Serials on the used examples we found all start with AGW.
  9. Do not plan on bridging. Two MC312s cannot be combined. If 300 watts is not enough, move up to the MC462 or to monoblocks.

Who it is for, and what else to consider

The MC312 is for owners of moderately demanding speakers who want a full-size McIntosh stereo amp with the blue meters and autoformers, without paying MC462 weight and money. Both reviews describe it as transparent and effortless, and neither reviewer came close to its limits on floorstanding speakers in a normal room.

If you need more than 300 watts, the MC462 (450 watts, 115 lb) is the next step and the MC611 monoblocks after that. If you need less, the MC152 at 150 watts is the smallest amp in the same line. A used MC302 gives up 0.5 dB of dynamic headroom, the LED lighting and the pass-through outputs, but is otherwise the same 300 watt autoformer amplifier for noticeably less money. The MC312's natural partners are the C53 and C49 solid-state preamps and the C2700 or C2600 tube preamps, which is how it most often appears in dealer systems and bundle listings.

Frequently asked questions

What is a used McIntosh MC312 worth? Dealer-certified examples in the US have sold at $4,999 and are currently asking around $6,100 against an $8,500 list. A private sale should land in between; see the recorded sales table for what has actually changed hands on HiFi Registry.

When did the MC312 come out and what did it cost? McIntosh announced it on October 10, 2018 at $7,000 as the replacement for the MC302, shipping the same month. US list has since risen to $8,500.

What is the difference between the MC302 and MC312? Same 300 watt rating and autoformer output. The MC312 doubled the power supply filter capacitance, which lifts dynamic headroom from 1.8 dB to 2.3 dB, and added direct LED backlighting, upgraded wiring and components, new autoformer enclosures, Monogrammed Heatsinks, eco power management and balanced and unbalanced pass-through outputs.

Can the MC312 be bridged to mono? No. McIntosh's specifications list both mono bridge and mono parallel as not supported. The MC352 of 1998 to 2004 offered a 700 watt single-channel mode; the MC302 and MC312 do not.

Is the MC312 Quad Balanced? No. McIntosh lists the circuit as push-pull complementary. Quad Balanced is the MC462 and MC611 topology. Dealer copy that calls the MC312 Quad Balanced is mistaken.

How heavy is the MC312? 105 lb (47.6 kg) out of the box, 138 lb shipping weight. It is a two-person lift.

Does the McIntosh warranty transfer to a second owner? No. The 3 year warranty covers the original purchaser only, ends on transfer, and applies only to units bought from an authorized McIntosh dealer in the US or Canada.

Understanding the market

Half of recorded transactions fall between $5,499 and $6,099. The full range is tight — lowest to highest is only 1.4×, which suggests these units trade in a well-established band and condition moves price less than it does for many models.

Over the last twelve months this model averaged $6,139 across 8 recorded sales, 10% higher than the preceding twelve months.

What buyers should know

Ask when the unit was last serviced and whether the output devices are original. Bias and DC offset drift with age on solid-state amps. Confirm both channels have been tested under load, not just powered on.

This range reflects 13 recorded sales, compiled from publicly listed and completed sales elsewhere on the used market, not from HiFi Registry transactions. That is a large enough sample to price against with reasonable confidence, though condition and provenance still move individual units.
