McIntosh MA12000: used price, specs, and what to check before you buy

By HiFi Registry Staff · Published

In short: The MA12000 is McIntosh's most powerful integrated amplifier, a hybrid with four 12AX7A tubes in the preamp and a 350 watt per channel solid-state output stage, in production since October 2020. It launched at $14,000 and now lists at $17,500 in the US. Clean used examples have been selling through dealer pre-owned programs at roughly $13,800 to $14,000, with private asking prices from about $10,500 to $13,000. HiFi Registry's recorded sales for this model are in the table further down the page. Prices checked November 1, 2026.

Versions and years

There is one MA12000 circuit. What changes is the price and, since 2024, the badge.

VersionYearsWhat changed
MA12000October 2020 to presentLaunched at $14,000 US. Factory-installed DA2 Digital Audio Module from day one. List rose to $15,000, then to $17,500 as of November 2026.
MA12000 75th Anniversary Edition (MA12000-AN)2024 onwardSame specifications. Anniversary badging marking McIntosh's founding in 1949. Lists at $18,500 at World Wide Stereo, sold through showrooms.

Every MA12000 we can find, including units on dealer floors in November 2026, ships with the DA2. McIntosh describes the module as replaceable if a future module is released, but has announced no successor for this amplifier. Ask for proof if a seller claims a newer module.

Specs that matter

  • 350 watts per channel into 2, 4 or 8 ohms through McIntosh's output Autoformers; 1.5 dB dynamic headroom, damping factor above 40
  • Four 12AX7A tubes in the preamp stage, two per channel; solid-state power amplifier
  • Power Guard anti-clipping and Sentry Monitor fuse-less short-circuit protection
  • Ten analog inputs: two balanced, six unbalanced, one moving magnet phono (3.0 mV) and one moving coil phono (0.30 mV), both with adjustable loading
  • DA2 Digital Audio Module: two coaxial, two optical, one USB, one MCT (for McIntosh SACD transports) and one audio-only HDMI ARC input; 8-channel 32-bit quad balanced DAC, USB to 32-bit/384 kHz PCM and DSD512, coax and optical to 24-bit/192 kHz
  • Eight-band analog tone control with bypass, assignable per input
  • Outputs: one balanced variable, one unbalanced fixed, one unbalanced variable, plus Home Theater PassThru
  • Quarter-inch High Drive headphone output with HXD crossfeed
  • 108 lb (48.9 kg); 17.5 x 9.4 x 19.75 inches; 141 lb shipping weight
  • US list: $17,500 at authorized dealers (November 2026); 75th Anniversary Edition $18,500
  • Warranty: 3 years for the original owner, 90 days on the tubes, valid only on units bought from an authorized McIntosh dealer

How it relates to the MA9500 and MA8950

The MA12000 sits above McIntosh's solid-state integrateds rather than replacing any of them. The MA9500 (300 watts, $12,000 at launch) and MA8950 (200 watts, $9,000 at launch) arrived in February 2022 to replace the MA9000 and MA8900. Those updates brought the DA2 module, doubled filter capacitance and HDMI ARC to the solid-state line, so the MA9500 has the same digital section as the MA12000. What the MA12000 adds is the tube preamp, 50 more watts per channel and a larger chassis. Choosing between the two used is a question of whether the tube front end is worth the gap, not of features. An older MA9000 or MA8900 has the DA1 module, which tops out at DSD256 and has no HDMI input.

Used prices

HiFi Registry's recorded sales for the MA12000 are in the table below this guide. What the wider market shows, as of this writing:

  • Dealer certified pre-owned: The Music Room sold two examples at $13,799 (cosmetic 9) and $13,999 (cosmetic 8, one owner, one year old), both against the current $17,500 list. That is 79 to 80 percent of retail with a dealer's testing and a return window behind it.
  • Private sale: HifiShark records a US Audio Mart asking price of $10,500 in April 2025 and an Audiogon asking price of $12,000 in February 2025. An Audiogon listing for a sealed warranty-replacement unit asked $13,000 against a $15,000 MSRP at the time. Asking prices are not sold prices; treat the lower figures as the floor of the negotiating range.
  • Standard versus Anniversary: We have not found enough used Anniversary Edition sales to say whether the badge carries a premium on the secondary market.

The MA12000 has had three list prices in six years. A seller quoting "70 percent of retail" may be anchoring to $17,500 on a unit bought for $14,000. Ask what the unit actually cost and when.

What to check before buying

  1. Purchase date and invoice. The dealer invoice tells you which list price applied and whether any warranty remains for the original owner. It will not transfer to you.
  2. The four 12AX7A tubes. The warranty covers them for only 90 days, so a used amp is on its own. Ask whether they are the factory set and listen for hiss or microphonic ringing when tapping the chassis gently with the volume up and no signal.
  3. Output stage under load. Run the amp at moderate volume into the seller's speakers for twenty minutes and confirm the Power Guard indicators do not flash at normal levels and the meters track both channels evenly.
  4. Every digital input. The DA2 has seven. Test USB, at least one coax, one optical and HDMI ARC if you plan to use it with a TV. Confirm CEC power and volume control work over HDMI if that matters to you.
  5. Phono stage on both inputs. Reviewers rated the MM/MC stage highly; verify both inputs pass clean signal and the loading menu responds.
  6. Headphone output. Plug in and check both channels. It is a separate High Drive circuit and a failure there would not show on the speakers.
  7. Glass and chassis. The front glass panel, the polished stainless chassis and the meter illumination are expensive to replace and excluded from warranty for cosmetic damage after 30 days from original sale. Ask for photos under direct light.
  8. Packaging and moving. At 108 lb, and 141 lb boxed, factory packaging is close to mandatory for shipping. A unit without it should be priced accordingly or collected in person.

Who it is for, and what else to consider

The MA12000 is for someone who wants one box to run a full system: phono, DAC, HDMI from the TV, headphones and enough power for any speaker a living room can hold. Reviewers found the sound powerful and slightly warm rather than strictly neutral, with the phono stage and headphone output singled out as strengths and front-to-back depth and the lack of built-in streaming as the usual reservations.

If you want the same features without tubes and can live with 300 watts, the MA9500 is the obvious alternative, and it launched $2,000 below the MA12000's original price. If you want separates, a C53 preamp and an MC462 stereo amp are the McIntosh route to more power in two chassis.

Frequently asked questions

Understanding the market

Half of recorded transactions fall between $12,000 and $13,500. The full range is tight — lowest to highest is only 1.6×, which suggests these units trade in a well-established band and condition moves price less than it does for many models.

What buyers should know

Confirm the phono stage and headphone output work if fitted, as these are often untested by sellers. On units with digital inputs, check whether the DAC section is still supported and what sample rates it accepts.

This range reflects 14 recorded sales, compiled from publicly listed and completed sales elsewhere on the used market, not from HiFi Registry transactions. That is a large enough sample to price against with reasonable confidence, though condition and provenance still move individual units.
