McIntosh C8: used price, specs, and what to check before you buy

By HiFi Registry Staff · Published

In short: The C8 is McIntosh's compact tube preamplifier: four 12AX7a tubes under protective cages on an open stainless chassis styled after the MC275, with balanced and unbalanced line inputs, both MM and MC phono, bass and treble, and a High Drive headphone amplifier. It launched in September 2020 at $3,500 alongside the matching MC830 monoblock, and the US list price has since moved to $4,500. Dealer-certified used examples have been selling for $3,399 to $3,761. HiFi Registry's recorded sales for this model are in the table further down the page. Prices checked November 1, 2026.

Versions and years

There is one C8. McIntosh has not released a Mk II or a revised model number, and the circuit, tube complement and connector set are the same on every unit. The optional DA2 Digital Audio Module is the only configuration difference: it is a dealer-installed board that adds seven digital inputs (two coaxial, two optical, USB, MCT and an audio-only HDMI ARC), and a used C8 may or may not have it fitted.

Shipping to the US and Canada began in September 2020, so the earliest units are 2020 builds. Recent pre-owned units have carried AJH-prefix serial numbers.

The C8 was announced together with the MC830, a 300 watt into 8 ohm solid-state monoblock in the same open-chassis format, $4,000 each at launch. The same design language covers the MA252 and MA352 hybrid integrateds, which put a tube input stage and a solid-state output in one box.

Specs that matter

  • Preamp stage: four 12AX7a tubes. No 12AT7s, unlike the MA252 and MA352 hybrids. The tubes light green when running
  • Inputs: one balanced XLR, two unbalanced RCA, one moving magnet phono and one moving coil phono, both with adjustable loading. Five analog inputs in all. No digital inputs unless the DA2 module has been installed
  • Outputs: one balanced variable, two unbalanced variable, no fixed outputs. One unbalanced output can be configured as a subwoofer output. Home Theater Pass Through
  • Headphones: 1/4 inch High Drive headphone amplifier. McIntosh's spec page does not list the HXD crossfeed feature for the C8
  • Bass and treble controls with tone bypass, balance, input level offset, input naming, all available from the included remote
  • Frequency response +0, -0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz; THD 0.08 percent; signal-to-noise 95 dB high level, 80 dB MM, 75 dB MC
  • Gain 15 dB high level, 55 dB MM, 75 dB MC; maximum output 16 V balanced, 8 V unbalanced
  • One main Power Control output, two trigger outputs, data ports, RS232, rear IR input, selectable 30 minute auto-off
  • Polished stainless steel chassis with black glass front panel, 12 9/32 x 7 5/8 x 16 1/4 inches, 18 lb (25 lb shipping)
  • US list: $4,500 at authorized dealers (November 2026)
  • Warranty: 3 years, limited to the original owner, void on units bought from anyone other than an authorized McIntosh dealer. Tubes are covered for 90 days

Used prices

HiFi Registry's recorded sales for the C8 are in the table below this guide. What the wider market shows, as of this writing:

  • Dealer-certified pre-owned, current list ($4,500): The Music Room has sold five C8s against the $4,500 MSRP. Two one-owner units under a year old went at $3,399 each with cosmetic grade 8 (faint abrasions in the mirror chrome). Two two-owner units graded 7 (faint scratches and scuffs) went at $3,699 and $3,761. A unit fitted with the DA2 module sold at $3,699.
  • Dealer-certified pre-owned, earlier list ($4,000): A sealed, unopened C8 sold at $3,399 and a DA2-equipped unit at $3,499 when the list price was $4,000.

Put together, a clean US C8 trades at roughly 75 to 85 percent of the current $4,500 list, in the same band as the MA252. Two things stand out: the grade 7 units sold for more than the grade 8 units, so timing and the list price increase matter more than small chrome marks, and the DA2 module added little or nothing to the sold price. These are dealer sales with a return window; private sales normally settle lower. The range rests on a small set of data points, so lean on recorded sales where you can.

What to check before buying

  1. Tubes and hours. Four 12AX7a tubes are the only consumables, and McIntosh covers them for only 90 days even on a new unit. A replacement set is inexpensive, but ask whether they are the factory McIntosh-branded tubes and roughly how many hours they have.
  2. Chrome and glass. The polished stainless chassis and tube deck pick up fingerprints and faint abrasions, and the black glass faceplate shows scratches. Every pre-owned unit in the data above lost a cosmetic grade for this. Ask for photos under direct light, including the tube deck between the cages.
  3. Volume and balance noise. Run the volume through its range with a source playing quietly and listen for scratchiness or dropouts, then do the same with balance, from the knobs and from the remote.
  4. Both phono inputs. Test the MM and the MC input, not just the one the seller uses. Hum on one and not the other points to a connector or grounding issue; hiss above the ordinary at MC gain points to a tube.
  5. Headphone jack. Confirm both channels play cleanly with no crackle when the plug is seated. A dead or intermittent jack is a repair, not a cosmetic issue.
  6. DA2 module, if claimed. Look for the digital inputs on the rear panel and ask the seller to confirm a digital source plays. Some listings call a unit "DAC capable" when they only mean the slot is there.
  7. Remote and packaging. Remote, power cord, manual and the factory carton. The tubes sit exposed under cages, so the original foam matters if it is going to travel.
  8. Warranty. A unit under 3 years old from an authorized dealer is covered for the original owner only. It does not transfer on resale, and it is void on units sold by anyone other than an authorized McIntosh dealer regardless of age.

Who it is for, and what else to consider

The C8 suits a buyer who wants a McIntosh tube line stage with a real phono section in a compact open chassis, without the price or size of the full-width tube preamps. AudioKey Reviews described the midrange as warm, smooth and rich, found the noise floor lower and the dynamics faster than mid-1990s tube preamps, and judged both phono stages coherent and musical but not a match for standalone phono stages above $2,000. Against the C22, the reviewer heard a similar soundstage but more precise imaging and resolution from the larger preamp.

McIntosh built it to drive the MC830 monoblocks, and that pairing is the obvious one. If you want the next step up in McIntosh tube preamps, the C22, which the AudioKey reviewer compared directly at $6,000, and the larger C2700 and C70 are the full-width alternatives at higher cost. If you want the C8's styling and tube input in one box, the MA252 and MA352 hybrids remove the need for a separate power amp.

Frequently asked questions

What is a used McIntosh C8 worth? Dealer-certified units have sold between $3,399 and $3,761 against the current $4,500 list. See the recorded sales table for what has actually changed hands on HiFi Registry.

How many tubes does the C8 use? Four 12AX7a tubes, all in the preamp stage. There are no 12AT7s and no output tubes; the C8 is a preamplifier only.

Does the C8 have a phono input? Yes, two: one moving magnet and one moving coil, each with adjustable loading. That is more phono flexibility than the MA252 hybrid, which has MM only.

Does the C8 have a DAC or digital inputs? Not as standard. The C8 is all analog out of the box. McIntosh's optional DA2 Digital Audio Module can be installed by a dealer and adds coaxial, optical, USB, MCT and HDMI ARC inputs. Check whether a used unit has it before assuming it does.

Does the C8 headphone output have HXD? McIntosh lists a 1/4 inch High Drive headphone amplifier for the C8. The HXD crossfeed feature is not listed on the C8 spec page.

Does the McIntosh warranty transfer to a second owner? No. The 3 year warranty is limited to the original owner and applies only to units bought from an authorized McIntosh dealer. Tubes are covered for 90 days.

Is the C8 still made? Yes. It has been in production since September 2020 and lists at $4,500 in the US as of November 2026, with stock at authorized dealers.

Understanding the market

Half of recorded transactions fall between $1,950 and $3,699. The full observed range is unusually wide — the highest recorded price is 8.1× the lowest. A spread that wide usually means the recorded sales are not strictly comparable: different configurations or finishes, units sold for parts or with cosmetic damage, or listings where the model name is shared across more than one variant. Treat the middle range as the useful signal and the extremes as outliers worth investigating before you price against them.

What buyers should know

Check whether the unit uses tubes or solid-state gain, and if tubes, when they were last replaced. Confirm all inputs switch cleanly and the volume control is free of channel imbalance at low levels, which is the most common wear point.

This range reflects 16 recorded sales, compiled from publicly listed and completed sales elsewhere on the used market, not from HiFi Registry transactions. That is a large enough sample to price against with reasonable confidence, though condition and provenance still move individual units.
