A Buyer’s Guide to Vitus Audio

A chapter of HFR’s Complete Buyer’s Guide to High-End Audio

Vitus Audio is a Danish maker of ultra-high-end solid-state electronics, founded by an engineer whose motivation was strikingly direct: at 18, Hans-Ole Vitus heard Gryphon Audio Designs equipment he couldn’t afford, and decided to study electronic engineering so he could eventually build his own. He spent eight years developing his first products privately before Vitus Audio’s public debut — an unusually long runway in an industry where most companies ship within a year or two of founding.

Since May 2022, Hans-Ole’s son Alexander Vitus Mogensen has run the company as CEO while Hans-Ole works full-time as Chief Technology Officer, still designing every current product. Three tiers — Reference, Signature, and Masterpiece — share the same fundamental engineering approach at escalating levels of chassis and power-supply investment.

This guide covers Vitus Audio’s founding story, its design philosophy, the current product line, and what to know before buying used.

Vitus Audio: The Brand

Hans-Ole Vitus Nielsen’s musical involvement started young: he played snare drum in a street marching band, Åbyhøj Tambourkorps, from around age 12, and was taking apart his own hi-fi separates not long after. At 18 he heard Gryphon Audio Designs equipment he couldn’t afford — the experience that pushed him toward formal electronic engineering study. He went on to work at Texas Instruments as a sales manager for the Danish market; his full name, Hans Ole Vitus Nielsen, was shortened to “Hans-Ole Vitus” on his Texas Instruments business cards, and the shortened form stuck as his professional name.

Vitus Audio was founded in 1995 as an entirely private venture — no products, no revenue, no public presence, just development. Hans-Ole has described the process directly: “I actually started in 1995, but I didn’t release the first product before 2003 ... It took me eight years to get that particular part done to the level I wanted it to be.” The first three products — the RP-100 phono stage, RL-100 line stage, and SM-100 monoblock power amplifier — debuted at the Stockholm audio show in 2003; both the phono and line stages were originally battery-powered, an unusual choice made to isolate the audio circuits from AC mains noise, later discontinued when EU regulations tightened on shipping large battery packs internationally. Hans-Ole has said the “first real public presentation of Vitus Audio” was actually CES 2004, distinguishing the earlier European shows from Vitus’s formal international debut.

Family succession

Hans-Ole’s son, Alexander Vitus Mogensen, founded AVM-TEC — a CNC manufacturing and measurement firm — at age 17 in 2010; the design-conscious sister brand Alluxity operates under AVM-TEC. On May 1, 2022, a formal transition took place: Alexander became CEO of both Vitus Audio and Alluxity, Lukas Birk Eriksen became COO, and Hans-Ole stepped into the role of Chief Technology Officer to focus on engineering and R&D. AVM-TEC was consolidated into a new holding structure, AVA Group A/S, in which Alexander and Lukas jointly hold 50% and Hans-Ole retains the other 50%. Alexander said at the time: “I’m greatly looking forward to managing the growth of AVA Group A/S as a company and to developing the Vitus Audio and Alluxity brands side by side, while adding some new product lines.” Hans-Ole added: “I have huge confidence in the combined abilities of Alexander Vitus Mogensen and Lukas B. Eriksen to drive the company on to the next level.”

Recent recognition

In April 2023, Stereophile documented a roughly $1.18 million AXPONA demonstration system pairing Estelon Extreme Mk.II loudspeakers with a full Vitus Audio Masterpiece front end and amplification — including a pair of MP-S201 Mk.I stereo power amplifiers (around $230,000 total), an MP-L201 Mk.II preamplifier ($70,000), and an MP-D201 Mk.III DAC ($40,000). In 2024, the RI-101 Mk.II won Mono & Stereo’s Best of the Year award in the Integrated Amplifier category and became Roon Ready certified.

Design Philosophy

Vitus is a solid-state house across its entire range, with the higher tiers biased toward pure Class A operation. The SIA-030 Signature-tier integrated is the clearest expression of this flexibility: it delivers 30 watts per channel in pure Class A, or 200 watts per channel in high-biased Class AB, switchable by the owner. Hans-Ole has described his standard for a new release directly: “We take great pride in designing our equipment. I don’t want to introduce it for the sake of putting a product in the market ... it needs to be perfect and that is why I delayed it for one-and-a-half years from the planned launch date.” Of the SIA-030 specifically, he said: “There is no other product in its class like the SIA-030, offering superlative performance.”

Vitus’s no-global-negative-feedback engineering position places it alongside several other Danish high-end manufacturers, including Gryphon Audio — the brand whose sound originally set Hans-Ole on this path. Amplifiers use custom-wound transformers and hand-matched critical parts, non-magnetic stainless steel and solid aluminum chassis, and every unit is stress-tested and burned in before shipping at the company’s Herning facility. The three product tiers — Reference, Signature, Masterpiece — share this same engineering foundation; the differences are chassis quality, parts matching, and power-supply elaboration rather than fundamentally different circuits.

Iconic Model Families

The founding trio: RP-100, RL-100, SM-100 (2003)

Vitus Audio’s debut products, the culmination of eight years of private R&D. The RP-100 phono stage and RL-100 line stage were both originally battery-powered for total AC-mains isolation, later succeeded by the externally-powered RP-102 and RL-102 once EU battery-shipping restrictions made the original design impractical to sell internationally. The SM-100 monoblock power amplifier established the amplifier topology later refined into the current SM-103 Mk.II.

RI-101 and RI-101 Mk.II — the Reference-tier integrated (2011–present)

Vitus Audio’s most widely available product and the natural entry point to the brand. The current RI-101 Mk.II is priced from $22,313 in the US, with optional DAC and DAC/streamer modules. It became Vitus’s first Roon Ready certified product and won Mono & Stereo’s 2024 Integrated Amplifier of the Year award.

SIA-030 — the switchable Class A / Class AB integrated (2019–present)

Introduced at High End Munich 2019 in a distinctive titanium-orange finish, the SIA-030 is a 55 kg Signature-tier integrated delivering 30 watts pure Class A or 200 watts Class AB, switchable by the owner, currently priced at $57,500 in the US.

SM-103 Mk.II — Signature-tier monoblocks

Vitus’s Signature-tier power amplifier, priced at $85,050 per pair in the US, paired with the matching SL-103 line stage.

The Masterpiece series — MP-P201, MP-S201, MP-L201, MP-M201

Vitus’s cost-no-object flagship tier. Stereophile’s coverage of a full Masterpiece system at AXPONA 2023 put a pair of MP-S201 Mk.I stereo power amplifiers at roughly $230,000 combined, the MP-L201 Mk.II preamplifier at $70,000, and the MP-D201 Mk.III DAC at $40,000 — components from a demonstration system that totaled roughly $1.18 million including loudspeakers and cabling. Individual Masterpiece component pricing varies by configuration; contact an authorized dealer for a current quote.

Current Product Line (2024–2026)

Vitus Audio’s current lineup is organized into three tiers, all designed and built in Herning, Denmark.

Reference series

RI-101 Mk.II integrated (from $22,313), RP-102 phono stage, RL-102 line stage, RD-101 Mk.II DAC/streamer.

Signature series

SIA-025 Mk.II and SIA-030 ($57,500) integrated amplifiers, SM-103 Mk.II monoblocks ($85,050/pair), SL-103 line stage, SD-025 Mk.II DAC/streamer.

Masterpiece series

MP-P201 phono preamplifier, MP-L201 preamplifier, MP-S201 stereo and MP-M201 monoblock power amplifiers, MP-D201 DAC — Vitus Audio’s state-of-the-art tier without cost consideration.

Buying Used Vitus Audio

Vitus Audio’s used market is thinner than most reference-tier brands — production volumes are modest and first-owner satisfaction tends to be high. When units do come to market, engineering continuity (Hans-Ole has designed every product since 1995) and factory service continuity work in a buyer’s favor. A framework:

RI-101 and RI-101 Mk.II are the natural entry point

These Reference-tier integrateds deliver the core Vitus signature at a meaningful discount to current new pricing, and are the most commonly recommended first Vitus purchase. Verify whether a used example has been upgraded to Mk.II specification and whether any DAC/streamer module is installed.

Battery-powered RP-100 and RL-100 are collector items

Original battery-powered units from Vitus’s founding era (2003–circa 2005) are increasingly rare. Verify battery-pack condition and replacement availability before agreeing to a price — factory service can generally support these units, but the international battery-shipping restrictions that ended their production remain a practical consideration for parts logistics.

Signature-tier units (SIA-025, SIA-030, SM-103) hold value well

Smaller production volumes than Reference-tier products tend to support stronger used pricing. On the SIA-030 specifically, verify the Class A / Class AB switch operates correctly — it is a distinctive feature worth confirming before purchase.

Masterpiece-tier products mostly transact through dealers

Given limited production and price point, Masterpiece components are uncommon on the open market; most changes of ownership happen through the authorized dealer network rather than public listings.

Vitus Audio on the Used Market

Vitus Audio’s used pricing has been comparatively stable, consistent with the brand’s long product lifecycles — the original RI-101 platform has been in the line in some form for well over a decade.

Reference-tier integrateds are the most liquid used-market segment, reflecting both production volume and broad demand for an accessible entry point to the brand.

Signature-tier products tend to hold value at least as well, given smaller production runs and steady demand from buyers who have already owned Reference-tier Vitus gear.

Masterpiece-tier products transact infrequently and mostly through dealer-facilitated sales rather than open marketplaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who founded Vitus Audio?

Hans-Ole Vitus Nielsen — full legal name Hans Ole Vitus Nielsen, shortened to “Hans-Ole Vitus” on his Texas Instruments business cards, which stuck as his professional name. At 18 he heard Gryphon Audio Designs equipment he couldn’t afford and decided to study electronic engineering; while working as a Texas Instruments sales manager, he began building his own amplifiers privately in 1995. The first three Vitus Audio products debuted at the Stockholm audio show in 2003, after eight years of private development.

Is Hans-Ole Vitus still at the company?

Yes. On May 1, 2022, Hans-Ole stepped down as CEO — his son Alexander Vitus Mogensen took over that role, with Lukas Birk Eriksen becoming COO — and Hans-Ole became Chief Technology Officer, focused full-time on engineering and R&D. He remains the designer behind every current Vitus product.

What is the AVA Group?

AVA Group A/S is the Danish holding structure for Vitus Audio. Alexander Vitus Mogensen founded AVM-TEC, a CNC manufacturing and measurement firm, in 2010 at age 17; Alluxity, a more design-conscious sister brand, operates under AVM-TEC. Following the May 2022 leadership transition, Alexander and Lukas Birk Eriksen jointly hold 50% of AVA Group A/S, with Hans-Ole retaining the other 50%.

What is the difference between the Reference, Signature, and Masterpiece tiers?

All three tiers share the same core Vitus engineering approach; the differences are chassis construction, internal parts quality and matching, and power-supply investment. Reference is the accessible entry tier (the RI-101 Mk.II integrated, from roughly $22,300). Signature sits in the middle with heavier chassis and more elaborate power supplies (SIA-030, SM-103 Mk.II). Masterpiece is the cost-no-object flagship tier (MP-P201, MP-S201, MP-L201, MP-M201).
