Founded in 1991 by Nelson Pass in a home shop in Foresthill, California, the company now operates from a facility in Auburn and continues to build amplifiers, preamplifiers, and integrated amplifiers to a philosophy Nelson has stated for fifty years: simpler circuits, fewer gain stages, higher bias, longer service life. Pass Labs services every product it has ever made, including 30-year-old Aleph 0 monoblocks from 1992.
Buying a used Pass Labs unit is genuinely different from buying most used audio. The build quality means a well-cared-for amp from fifteen years ago still performs to its original specification. The factory in Auburn services every model. And the 3-year Pass Labs warranty is fully transferable to a second owner if the unit was originally sold through an authorized dealer and remains unmodified — a policy that materially separates Pass Labs from most Western high-end brands.

Nelson Pass (born June 27, 1951) grew up in Santa Rosa, California. He earned a BS in Physics from UC Davis in 1974. During his undergraduate years he built loudspeakers and worked for ESS. In late 1973 he left ESS to co-found Threshold Corporation with ESS marketing director René Besne; the two formally incorporated Threshold Electronics on December 5, 1974. Joe Sammut became the third partner shortly after. Wayne Colburn joined in the mid-1970s.
Threshold’s contributions include the Stasis amplifier topology (later licensed to Nakamichi), the 800A high-bias Class A power amplifier, and the influential Adcom GFA-555. Threshold was sold to Dynatech in 1987; Nelson stayed as president running the company for four years before leaving in 1991 to start Pass Labs.
Nelson Pass founded Pass Labs in 1991 on his property in Foresthill, California. Elena Tong, hired early on to help produce the first amplifiers, “manages much of the company to this day” per Pass Labs’ own history page. The first commercial product, the Aleph 0 — a 70W monoblock with three MOSFET gain stages — shipped in 1992.
Wayne Colburn joined Pass Labs in 1994 and leads preamplifier design. Joe Sammut left Krell in 1995 to become operations chief; Desmond Harrington followed in 1996 and brought mechanical design work that first appeared in the 1998 X1000. Sammut became Pass Labs president in 1998–1999. The company today is led by President Anastasia Protopappas.

In 2004, Nelson started First Watt as a separate company — a small-batch outlet for low-power single-ended designs that would not fit the Pass Labs commercial roster. First Watt is the project home for Nelson’s most personal amplifier designs (F-series, SIT series, Aleph J). Pass Labs today handles all First Watt distribution.
Pass Labs received two patents in 1994, one of which became the SuperSymmetric circuit topology — a fully balanced arrangement where symmetrical differential inputs, matched gain stages, and a summing output cancel distortion and noise common to both halves. The X1000 in 1998 was the first amplifier to ship with SuperSymmetric. Every current Pass Labs X-series and XA-series amplifier uses a descendant of that topology.

Two-chassis designs with separate power supply and amplifier boxes per side. Xs 150 (150W Class A) and Xs 300 (300W Class A) are the current flagship monoblock amps. Xs Pre is the flagship line-level preamp; Xs Phono is the flagship phono preamp.

Pass Labs’ factory warranty, stated verbatim on the company’s website: “All Pass Laboratories products purchased new from an authorized Pass Laboratories dealer in North America are covered by a transferable, limited 3-year warranty.” The warranty covers parts and labor at the factory or a factory-specified repair facility. Damage from physical abuse is excluded. Modifications without written factory approval void the warranty entirely. The customer is responsible for shipping and insurance both ways. Factory repairs on out-of-warranty units carry a 60-day warranty on the scope of the repair.
Three points matter for the used marketplace:
Ask for the original dealer invoice or Pass Labs warranty registration. Verify the serial matches the paperwork. Contact Pass Labs directly to confirm the unit was sold through an authorized dealer and is eligible for warranty transfer.
Every Pass Labs Class A amplifier has front-panel bias/output meters that should track output in real time. Sticky or non-responsive meters can indicate driver board or bias supply issues.
Anodized aluminum chassis with milled-out heat sinks. Scratches to the top surface and cosmetic marks on the heat sinks are common on used units and materially affect resale value.
XA30.8 is 51 pounds, XA60.8 monoblock is 90 pounds, Xs 300 is over 200 pounds per amplifier chassis with a separate 90-pound power supply. Lighter than spec is a red flag for missing internal components.
Aleph-era amps from the 1990s and early X-series amps from the early 2000s may benefit from a factory recap. Pass Labs service handles this; expect several hundred dollars per amplifier depending on model.

Reno HiFi was Pass Labs’ most prominent long-time online dealer, run by Mark Sammut, son of Nelson Pass’s longtime business partner Joe Sammut. Reno HiFi operated from 1998 and permanently closed in early September 2023 when Mark retired. Any used Pass Labs unit currently marketed as a “Reno HiFi” purchase dates from before September 2023.
Yes — Pass Labs states it directly: “All Pass Laboratories products purchased new from an authorized Pass Laboratories dealer in North America are covered by a transferable, limited 3-year warranty.” This is unusual among high-end audio brands, most of which void the warranty the moment a unit changes hands. The transfer only holds if the unit was originally bought new through an authorized North American dealer.
Three things: damage from physical abuse, modifications made without written factory approval, and removal or alteration of the serial number. Pass Labs will not service a unit with an altered or missing serial, regardless of its history.
Not through the North American service channel. Pass Labs does not sell international-voltage units to authorized US dealers or third parties in the United States, and non-North American product must be returned to its country of origin for warranty service.

XA-series amplifiers run pure Class A, single-ended into 8Ω. X-series amplifiers deliver their first watts in Class A and the remaining watts in Class A/B, giving higher output than the XA line at the cost of pure Class A operation throughout.
